Obituary for A.C. Pettway

A.C. (a/k/a “Ace”) Pettway, 91, was a resident of Bridgeport, CT since 1948. Ace was born July 15, 1926 in Boykin (Gee’s Bend), Alabama, the son of the late Leah and Clay Pettway of Boykin. Ace married Audrey Eulalia Burton of Edwardsville, VA, in 1951 in Brooklyn, NY, and was a loving, devoted husband to her for more than 60 years until his passing. Ace served in the United States Army Air Forces in the Pacific during WWII and thought often of his fallen brothers in arms. A true servant of God, he expressed his faith and commitment to service as a decades-long member of Mt. Aery Baptist Church and as a 33rd degree freemason in the Masonic Order. He took pride in his more than 40 years of work as a crane operator at Jacob Brothers. Ace also loved riding his Harley-Davidsons with the Park City Road Riders and coaching the Connecticut Stars softball team. He cherished many new and old friends during his lifetime.

Ace dedicated his life to the unwavering support of his wife, children, numerous siblings, his beloved mother, and countless other family. He will be forever admired and loved in our thoughts as a selfless man for whom family came above all.

In addition to his loving wife, Ace leaves his son Darryl Pettway of Bridgeport, CT, his daughter Leah (William) Rowland of Boston, MA, his brothers Willene (Cloretta) Pettway of Bridgeport, CT, Daniel (Annie) Pettway and Samuel Pettway of Boykin, AL; his sisters Eartha Mae Foster of Bridgeport, CT, Shirley Goode of Lawrenceville, GA, Rosa Lee (Thomas) Jones of Ayer, MA, and Corinne (David) Myles of Boykin, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his son Ronald Pettway, and by brothers and sisters J.C. Pettway, Barry Pettway, James Pettway, Early Pettway, Roden Pettway, Henderson Pettway, Annie Lee Williams, and Meridian Gamble.

The family extends its thanks to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for attentive medical care of Ace during his illness.
