Obituary for Geneva K. Thomas

Geneva Delores Thomas departed this life on January 12, 2018 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Geneva was the eleventh child of twelve children born to the late Henry W. Kelly and Fannie Grady Kelly. She was born October 26, 1935 in Leland, North Carolina in the area called Phoenix. Seven brothers and three sisters predeceased her.

Geneva was educated in the public schools of Brunswick County, N.C. She attended Phoenix Elementary School and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. She also attended and graduated from Bulter Business school and received her associated degree from Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Ct.

Geneva moved to Connecticut in 1954. In 1957, she married John Thomas. Three children were born from this union. She was gainfully employed for many years of her life. She worked as a head cook for some prominent families and for over 30 years she enjoyed being a Teacher Assistant, and a Home School Coordinator for the City of Bridgeport Board of Education. She served as Chief Steward, Treasurer and President of AFSCME Local 1522.

She was a faithful member of Summerville A.M.E. Zion Church until she moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. Upon moving to Bridgeport, she joined First Baptist Church of Stratford, CT and was a faithful member until her time of illness. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Scholarship Committee and Usher Board.

Geneva was truly a people person who loves her family and was a compassionate confidante and friend who people trusted.

Geneva leaves to cherish her memories: a husband, John Thomas Sr. of Bridgeport, Connecticut: two sons, John Thomas Jr. of San Marcos, California, Robert Thomas Sr. of Bishopville, Maryland; one daughter, Corell Thomas of Bridgeport, Connecticut; and three grandsons, Robert Thomas Jr. of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Marcus Thomas of Nabia, Africa, and Kenneth Thomas of Downey, California; one sister, Fannie Kelly Wilson of Burlington, North Carolina and one brother, Freddie Kelly of Burlington, North Carolina; four sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
