Obituary for James C Polk

James Carl Polk of Silver Creek, Mississippi was born on September 15, 1941, to the late Jessie Mae Levi and the late Betro Polk. Early Friday morning, May 18, 2018, Jim heard his Master's voice as He beckoned him home. Jim, as he was affectionately known, was the older of two children. His younger brother predeceased him.

Jim was educated in the Lawrence County school system and graduated from Monticello High School. Jim also was a graduate of The Piney Woods Junior College in Jackson, Mississippi.
Jim was a proud Viet Nam Era Veteran. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on July 7, 1966. While serving in the United States Army, Jim received the Viet Nam Service Medal as well as the Marksman Service Badge Rifle M-14. On April 6, 1968, he was honorably discharged from the Oakland Army Personnel Center in Oakland, California.

Shortly after being discharged from the Armed Services, Jim moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he met the former Heather Kathryn Providence. On December 19, 1970, they united in marriage. This union was blessed with two children -- Bevis Polk and Kimberly Polk.
Jim worked at Greenwich Hospital for 10 years prior to becoming a Licensed Plumber for the State of Connecticut. When Jim took the State of Connecticut Examination for Plumbers, he placed second on the State exam.

Jim was "The Master Chess Player" and would challenge anyone to a good game of chess. He had his chess board with him always and he was always ready to play. He would sit there, with his infectious laugh, and laugh at his opponent because he knew whatever move they made ultimately it would prove to be the wrong move. Jim was one of the best, if not the best, chess players in this area.

Jim joined East End Baptist Tabernacle Church in the late '70s under the tutelage of The Rev. Dr. Michael P. Williams and Rev. Williams baptized him as well. Jim was an active member of the Men's Choir and the Men's Fellowship. Earlier in his life he served on the Senior Usher Board and also sang in the Radio Choir and the Mass Choir. When it was time for church, Jim and his tambourine, would be there to render some of the music. Jim became known as "The Tambourine Man."

Jim was a dedicated and devoted husband to his wife Heather and his children and grandchildren. We will miss his laughter and his jokes, but most of all we will miss all of the love and protection and guidance he provided to his family.

Jim leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife of 47 years Heather Kathryn Polk--two children, Bevis (Myriam) Polk, Fairfield, Connecticut; Kimberly Polk (Danny) Holmes, Naugatuck, Connecticut; six grandchildren--Jessie Polk; Ka'von Polk, Daja Polk; Daniel Holmes, Jr., Elijah Holmes and Isaiah Holmes; four brothers-in-law--Kenneth Phillips, Brooklyn, New York; Bert Providence, Bloomfield, Connecticut; Michael Providence, Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies; Kenrick Providence, Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies. Three sisters-in-law--Patsy Providence, Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies; Jemma Providence, Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies and Brenda Providence, Bloomfield, Connecticut and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jim was predeceased by his mother and father; one brother; one brother-in-law Carlton Toppin; three sisters-in-law--Aileen Phillips, Shirley Toppin and Merle Providence.
Jim will be placed to rest with the full Military Salute Friday, May 25, 2018 in the Veterans' State Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut.
