Obituary for Lula Jane Pugh-Bailey

Lula Jane Bailey, age 87, of Bridgeport (formerly of Spring Hill, Florida), the beloved daughter of the late Les and Pauline Vinson, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Lord Chamberlain in Stratford, CT. She was born on September 23, 1930 in Anderson County, South Carolina.

As a little girl she grew up in the country of South Carolina, often taking care of her siblings.

In her adult years she worked as a home health aid for the Visiting Nurse Association of Bridgeport for 17 years and was very proud of her work. She was also co-owner of E & M Dry Cleaners, the first pick up and drop off dry cleaning service in Fairfield county.

Lula Jane was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and wife.  She worked hard and loved even harder. She cherished her family and always wanted to be out and about, or at the center, visiting with family and friends. She was fun to be around and loved by many, and brought laughter into any room with her quick wit. No matter what she was doing or what she was going through, Lula Jane always had others on her mind. She was always picking up a shirt or a scarf or whatever else she saw for one of her family members. She welcomed anyone into her home and believed in the sentiment “what’s mine is yours.” She loved to make things for her family, including blankets and figurines, like wedding cake toppers and nativity sets. Lula Jane cared about everyone she ever crossed paths with until the very end. She was an energetic person who was full of life and took pride in being able to get up and go, even in her eighties. Lula Jane faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Stratford and Power in the Word of Bridgeport.. She was a member of the Gospel Choir and the Senior Usher Board at First Baptist. And when she moved down to Florida she always called to see how everyone there was doing. She was an independent woman with a huge heart and a strong mind and we have all been blessed to have such an amazing role model as the matriarch of our family.

Lula Jane leaves behind her loving husband James Bailey of 27 years, her children Dorothy Washington, Mattie Pettway (Elder Jerry Pettway), Mary Bynum (Garrett Bynum), Enouch Pugh (Mikyong Pugh), Anita Harris (Apostle Robert Harris), Deidre Simeon, and Kenneth Pugh (Samanta Pugh), her loving sisters Margaret Hunter, Betty Bens, and Almanell Vinson, and an army of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and as she called them, her “great grands.”

She was predeceased by her first husband, Enoch Pugh, her daughter Barbara Lanham, and her siblings Velma Roseman, Aline Cheeks, Harold Vinson, Florence Walker, Florene Gardner, Benjamin Vinson, Mildred Bussey, Genette Chandler, and Kenneth Vinson.
