Obituary for Mary C Williams

Mary Clark Williams departed this life Monday, May 21, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Mary was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina to the late Daniel F. Clark and Mary Y. Clark on December 1, 1924. She attended school in Goldsboro and graduated from Dillard High School.

In May, 1946, Mary married Leroy Williams, Jr. To this union six children were born. (Marilyn Williams Council, Lawrence Williams, James Williams, Diane Watts, Annetta Briggs, and Michael Williams)

Mary worked as a receptionist at North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and as an elevator operator at City Trust Bank. Because of her love for children and helping others, she began working at the Bridgeport Board of Education as an instructional assistant.

Mary retired from the Bridgeport Board of Education in 1991 after 23 years of service as an instructional assistant. After retirement, Mary volunteered at St. Vincent’s Medical Center and was a liaison for the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc., for Black Rock School. Mary was involved in and held offices in Church Women United. She was actively involved in the Eisenhower Senior Center. She enjoyed ceramics and made many angels, elephants, and other ceramic pieces for family and friends.

Mary was a long time and active member of First Baptist Church of Stratford. She actively served on F.B.C’s Senior Usher Board, the Gospel Choir, New Life Choir, Inspirational Choir, Hospitality Ministry, Women’s Fellowship, Evangelism Explosion and Bible Study, Loyal Workers Ministry, and Pastor’s Aid. Her joy was the Pastor’s Aid where she served as President. She also held offices as Secretary of the Hospitality Ministry, various offices. Mary was the recipient of the A. Marie Long Award, FBC Honoree of Honor and Recognition in 1995.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Leroy and her grandson, Eric Briggs. To cherish her memory are: her six children Marilyn Council, Lawrence Williams (Maelene), James Williams, Diane Watts (Alfred), Annetta Briggs, Michael Williams; nine grandchildren: Daniel Williams (Maylan), Sonya Daniels, Jonathan Council (Laurel), Adrienne Rodriguez (Joel), Jason Williams (April), Charles Council, Laura Atkinson (Che’) Arlyn Ryan Williams, Eric Alexander Briggs (deceased): thirteen great-grandchildren Desia' Council (Orlando), Jonathan Council, Jr. , Derrick Barber, Jonathan Deshawn Council (Joanni), Danielle Williams, Arlyn Williams, Zanai Williams, Mia Miller Briggs, Haven Atkinson, Harley Atkinson, Whitlely Williams, Taina Nedab Williams, Tianhjay Nedab Williams, Kyle Jean-Baptiste (deceased): two sister-in-laws Estelle Thorpe and Bettye Williams, two brother-in-laws, Ralph Williams (Anita) and Clarence Williams (Mildred); and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
