Obituary for Tommie Mae Hinton

Tommie Mae Hinton was born April 25, 1933 to Tom and Laura Fewell of Rock Hill, SC who predeceased her in death.

Tommie Mae graduated from Emmet Scott high school in Rock Hill, SC where she played basketball, played the saxophone and was a majorette for the school band. She went onto attend and graduate from Friendship Jr. College which was also in Rock Hill, SC. She later attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Peoria, IL.

On February 2, 1956 she married her childhood sweetheart, Alexander “June” Hinton, Jr. in Rock Hill, SC for 27 years. That same year they relocated to Bridgeport, CT. To this union was born three sons and one daughter, Michael, Curtis, Tony and Debora. The family joined the Russell Temple CME Church and became active members. Tommie Mae played the piano and sung in the Senior and Gospel Choirs. Music was special to her and she enjoyed singing hymns. She was also a church Missionary.

Tommie Mae was a teacher for many years for the Bridgeport Public School system and also headed many after-school programs for children in the community. Later on she became an Administrative Asst. for St. Vincent’s College of Nursing where she retired.

Tommie Mae loved to sew, sing, work with children and play the piano. She was a woman of many talents. She knitted, gardened, was also a hairdresser, but most of all she cherished spending time with her family hosting many dinners and cookouts through the years.

Tommie Mae was predeceased in death by her brothers: Johnny Steele, Robert Fewell, Richard Fewell, Joseph, Furler, and John Henry Cook; Sisters: Catherine Hall and Evelynn Johnson.

Tommie Mae leaves to cherish her memories her sister and best friend: Bettie Hailey of Bridgeport, CT; one daughter: Debora Hinton of Bridgeport, CT., and three sons: Michael Hinton (Lydia) of Bridgeport, CT, Curtis Hinton (Aisha) of Rock Hill, SC, and Tony Hinton of Milford CT; seven grandchildren: Marsha Hinton of Bridgeport, CT, Alvin Chappell, Jr. of Cary, NC, Tony Hinton, Jr. of Bridgeport, CT, Lisa Hinton of Bridgeport, CT, Alexander Hinton of Atlanta, GA, Porteisha Rainey of Bridgeport, CT, and Jason Gaston of Ansonia, CT; 3great-grands: Lissan, Amya & London Dior and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
