Obituary for Clyde McLaughlin

Clyde McLaughlin

The man. Clyde took fashion cues from no one. His unique style was all his own as well as his humorous and witty personality. When it came to the last word or joke no one was a match for him, his hearty laugh could be heard miles away. To hear him sing you would think you were in the room with Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstein, or Arthur Prysock. To us as his children his soothing voice at bedtime along with our nightly prayers always made us feel safe and will always be cherished. It was no question at family gatherings, celebrations or holidays that he took the role as the key note singer and when he sang it was a requirement that you stopped to listen!

In August of 1953 in Norfolk, VA on a park bench Clyde serenaded his then girlfriend (Sophronia) with a love ballad and according to him she had no choice, but to accept his proposal and they married in September of 1953. They relocated to Connecticut and from this union they had three beautiful children, Clyde Jr., Tanya and Dawn. Clyde and Fronie remained married until death they departed.

Clyde was born in Norfolk, Virginia on July 24, 1929 to the late, James McLaughlin and Lucille Wyche-McLaughlin. He was predeceased by his wife (Sophronia), his parents, eight siblings and one grandson (Jourdan). He was employed at Avco Lycoming formerly known as Textron Lycoming in Stratford for forty-six years. He was a very proud and dedicated worker a man who knew responsibility, he knew what it took to provide and keep his family together. Our dad loved being surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and home cooked meals were his delight.

On May 26, 2018 our beloved father, passed away peacefully in Bridgeport Hospital. He leaves his legacy to be treasured by Clyde McLaughlin Jr., Tanya Lazaro-Young (Robert), a former son-in-law, David E. Lazaro, Dawn M. Hatchett (Benny), eleven grandchildren, eleven great grand-children, four great-great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Yes, our proud father loved fashion, humor, singing and yes, he was a smart aleck! But above all, he loved his family. His words of wisdom to us would be to laugh, love and “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”  Nehemiah 4:14

A Memorial Service will be held in his honor 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Mercy Tabernacle Church, 1300 Stratford Road, Stratford, CT., with Pastor Deborah Vereen, officiating.
