The Life Journey Honoring Deacon Christopher Moore, Jr.

Christopher Moore, Jr was born on July 8, 1923, to the late Christopher Moore, Sr. and Mary Wheeler Moore in Englewood, NJ. He went went to be with the Lord November 30, 2018. He married the love of his life, Queen Esther and became the stepfather to Calvin. They later had a daughter, Rita. Their union lasted 51 years until her passing in 2008.

Growing up with humble beginnings, he received his education in the Bergen County, New Jersey. Back then, he walked to school for miles even through harsh New England winters. At the age of 20, he was drafted and served in the Army during WWII. He retold on a number of occasions the mixed blessing of being in a segregated troop at some places while in combat. Namely, there was at least one time when Japanese soldiers passed by his colored troop and did not harm them; God's hand was on his life. He fought at Iwo Jima and was there when they raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi. He did what he had to do at the time but he became a proud veteran. He also had an experience as a young adult in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he almost drowned. He went under the water three times but called on the name of the Lord and was given the strength to swim. That experience gave him a blessed assurance that he was grateful for and had never forgotten.

He retired from the Norwalk School system after three decades of service as a custodian. He had quite a green thumb. From his nurturing spirit, he tended his garden and enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He also was the chef of the home. Under peaceful circumstances, he was fortune even to travel domestically and abroad over the years.

What can we say to all of this. He survived the Great Depression, the sulfur-filled trenches of combat, a near fatal drowning, the Jim Crow years, and some health challenges later in life. God has been good to him and satisfied him with long life. The Lord saved his life under a number to circumstances that some did not overcome. More importantly, at one point he called on the Lord to save his soul. This was his wish for others as well; he prayed for those who did not have a relationship with the Lord. He also looked forward for God's righteousness to reign. He did not neglect to serve the Lord with his gifts and talents. He was a faithfully served as a Deacon, Trustee and part of the Pastor's Aid Ministry; and faithfully drove to and attended Tuesday morning Bible study even through this year at Friendship Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and nurtured them and his mother until the time each of them had passed. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Rita Moore of Washington, DC, his granddaughter, Rhonda Pratt of Annapolis, MD, four great grandchildren, and a host of extended family members, friends, and loved ones. His independent spirit and sense of humor will be missed but not forgotten. So, take your rest. You don't have to study war no more. In that great getting up morning, you will continue rejoicing and we will see you again.
