Obituary for Norma J Holmes

Norma J. Holmes, age 83, of Stratford, CT died December 16, 2018, in Connecticut Hospice in Branford, CT. Norma was the mother of Victoria Holmes-Sells and Russell Holmes, Jr. and the grandmother of Jordan Sells. She was also the wife of the late Russell Holmes, Sr. Norma, daughter of Wesley Holmes, Sr. and Lucille Holmes, was born in Bridgeport CT on May 31, 1935.

She was a lifelong resident of Connecticut and educated within the Bridgeport School system, graduating Warren Harding School in 1953. During her high school years, she worked at Leavitt’s Department Store as a Sales Associate. She attended Butler Business School and later in life enhanced her education by taking multiple courses at Sacred Heart University.

Norma began her career in 1957 at Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing, as an Administrative Secretary, and stayed for 13 years. Widowed at a young age, she raised two children while continuing to move her career forward. Then, she moved to Recruitment and Training Program, Inc. (RTP) for 10 years, holding various positions including Counselor for Highway Supportive Services, Field Representative for the Apprenticeship Outreach Program and Project Director for the Youth Career Exploration Program. In the 1980s, Norma joined Pitney Bowes serving several roles and retired from the organization with the position of Manager of Executive Administrative Support Services. Norma received many accolades from senior leaders within the business on her determination, drive and overall great work. Norma enjoyed her work and time at Pitney Bowes and continued work there, as a consultant, after her retirement in 1999.

During her retirement years, Norma’s primary focus was her grandson. She spent years caring for him and instilling values that have contributed to his success while creating unforgettable memories that will remain with him throughout his life.

There was no greater passion in Norma’s life than her family and her friends. She was the pillar of strength during both of her children’s life-threatening illnesses. Norma was there for her sister (Peggy) during her illness and most recently helped to care for her ailing brother in law, (Lloyd). She was always the first to quietly offer a helping hand, physically, emotionally or financially.

In addition to Norma’s immediate family, she will be missed by her nephew, Keith Clinkscales (Gia), niece, Norma Clinkscales, nephew, Erik Clinkscales, nephew, Arnold Holmes, and one great-nephew, Robel Clinkscales, and many special family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Russell Holmes, Sr, brother, Wesley Holmes, Jr., and sister, Margaret Clinkscales.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation (Smilow Cancer Hospital).
