Obituary for Vivian Marie Candy Thomas

Vivian Marie Candy Thomas, 52, of Bridgeport, CT, went home to be with our Lord on Thursday, June 7, 2018. She was born August 17, 1965 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky to the late Gloria W. Thomas and Harry Thomas, Jr. She spent her early childhood in Columbia, South Carolina, were she attended elementary school. After moving to Bridgeport, she graduated from Central High School. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Paralegal Studies at Sacred Heart University, a Legal Secretarial Certificate from Butler Business Schools and Human Resources Certification from Fairfield University.

Vivian had been employed in the financial services industry since age 18. She worked 24 years at Peoples Bank (now People’s United Bank) and most recently for Hitachi Capital America in Norwalk, CT for the past 11 years.

She was a faithful member of the Greater Bridgeport Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. She received its Appreciation Award in 2017 and most currently served as their Director of Education. Vivian loved volunteerism and was a long-time member of the Neighborhood Revitalization Zone Planning Committee in the Bridgeport Hollow Neighborhood.

Her faith was strong. She was a member of the Southern Baptist faith most of her life, yet for a stint attended a Seventh Day Adventist church. She was very spiritual and studied feng shui, tai chi, yoga, pilates, meditation and reiki. She constantly sought to improve her health and overall wellness. As a people person, she wanted to improve the health of others and hoped to pursue a career in health care as an occupational therapist.

She had a passion for libraries; her favorite pastimes were reading or listening to audiobooks. “I grew up in the library,” she would say. She was a bit Bohemian – loving peace signs, Hendrix and anything tie-dyed. She felt she missed her era—as a 60s hippie! She loved ALL music and had an extensive CD collection. Asian food was her favorite–the spicier the BETTER!

Vivian is survived by her father, Harry, her sister, Deirdre E. Thomas, extended family Marjorie and Samone Wright and a host of relatives in California, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas, and many friends and co-workers who will never forget her great sense of humor, infectious smile and belly laugh.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to:
Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County.
