Obituary for Howard Austin

Howard Austin Sr., age 70 of Bridgeport, CT entered eternal rest on Monday, December 11, 2017 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, CT. He was born to the late Mr. & Mrs Daniel & Rosetta (Sallie) Austin. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 49 yrs, Mrs.Selma J. Smith-Austin; two sons Howard Austin Jr. and Dwayne R. Austin; four grandchildren, Howard D. Austin, Tatianna R. Austin, Valencia I. Austin and Skyler Austin and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family. He was predeceased by five brothers, post-deceased by one brother Richard Austin on 12/12/17 and predeceased by two sisters. Howard has two surviving brothers, Henry Austin Sr., of Nevada and John Austin of Virginia, four surviving sisters; Barbara (Charles) McLaurin of Mississippi, Elizabeth (Robert) Harris of Virginia, Juanita Austin of Bridgeport and Christina (Gary) Hamilton of Georgia.
Howard was a lifelong resident of Bridgeport, CT. He was a graduate of Stratford High School (1969). He continued post education in the culinary profession and held several positions with the following employers; General Electric (head chef), Perkin Elmer (masterchef), Jennies Family Restaurant (lead chef), Howard was part
owner & Head Chef of Texas Barbecue, Steam Boat Dock in Essex, Ct., State of Connecticut, (Dept of Corrections) as Head Chef until his Retirement in 2009. Howard was very active and committed to the community in which he lived and worked hard to make it a better place. He held the political position of Councilman with Councilman/President Tom McCarthy of the 133 District from 2007-2015. Howard was elected by very large margins four consecutive times. He served on the Budget Committee for 8 yrs. and also served on the Contract Committee. In his time served, he helped bring Steel Point Development, (Bass Pro Shops, Chipotle, Star Bucks and T-Mobile), to reality/life. Howard secured funding to completely renovate Central High School and secured funding to bring the New Wayne Street Park into revitalization.
