Obituary for Richard A. Brown

Richard Avon Brown Sr. was born July 6, 1933 to John and Julia Ann “Sister” Brown in Sumter, South Carolina. On Thursday April 19, 2018 God Dispatch Richard to join his heavenly kingdom surrounded by his loving family at Stamford Hospital. Richard migrated north with his parents to Stamford ,CT at a young age. He attended the local public schools and graduated from Stamford High School “Class of 1953.” Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army stationed in Forte Dix, NJ until he was honorably discharged in 1955.

Richard worked for the Stamford Department of Sanitation for over 35 years until his retirement. Mr. Brown or “PopPop” as he was affectionately called continued to keep himself occupied and became a responsible building supervisor in his housing complex as well as a volunteer helping people in need. He was infamous for wearing his paperboy hat and also loved for his contagious smile.

Richard was a kind man, a disciple of humility and integrity. Everything Richard has done he did with a pure heart. Whether it was leading a prayer or taking out the trash, he did it cheerfully. He had such a friendly disposition and treated everyone with the upmost respect. His reputation of friendliness earned him recognition of “The Go-To-Guy”. He loved helping EVERYONE. He stated that “keeping busy and helping others keeps him young” (in his soft raspy voice).

Family was everything to him. He made it his priority to support all of his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. From baby showers, to graduations, weddings or even a good ole Fish Frye, PopPop was always in attendance. His favorite family gathering of all was the SuperBowl Sunday Games enjoying great food and watching his favorite sport “Football”.

Richard enjoyed playing his bass guitar, watching old western movies, and reading the Bible. A God fearing and humble servant of the Lord was he. Richard was a dedicated member of Bethel AME Church in Stamford for 40 years, where he warmly greeted visitors, proudly did the welcome address and served as a member of the Steward Board.

He leaves to cherish his memory: wife of 5 years Katherine Brown. 8 sons Richard Jr. (Renee), Anthony (Valerie), Leslie (Jessica), Michael, Richard III (Toya), Brian and Efrain Brown and Joseph Evans. 11 Daughters Debra McKinney, Sherrell England, Pamela, Joyce, Anesa, Valerie, LaNika, Shanaya and Kionna Brown, Juledah Wilson and Gwendolyn Grice (Edward). 3 step-daughters Debra (Bruce), Karen and Michele Perry. 54 Grandchildren, 53 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.

Besides his parents Richard’s former wives Ernistine Brown and Slyvesta Brown predeceased him. Predecessors in death also include son Jeffrey Evans, daughter Lashawn Glover and 2 grandsons Cedric and Jaason McKinney.

Mr. Richard “PopPop” Brown will be sorely missed.
