Obituary for Evelyn Frances Smallwood-White

Evelyn Frances Smallwood-White was born April 8, 1945 in Bridgeport Connecticut to Buster Smallwood (Deceased) of Windsor North Carolina and Lou Bertha Garrett-(Smallwood) Eidson from Bridgeport.

Evelyn attended Bridgeport,CT and Stratford CT schools and graduated from Stratford High School in 1963. After taking classes at the University of Bridgeport, she was then employed by the General Electric Company in Bridgeport, becoming one of the first African American Executive Secretaries in the Wire and Cable Department. Evelyn worked at GE for 19 years and by the grace of God, was able to retire early as General Electric began to close down many of it’s plants in the USA including the one in Bridgeport, CT. Evelyn then did some acting at the Polka Dot Playhouse located on beautiful Pleasure Beach in Bridgeport. Evelyn was also a seamstress and made many of her own clothes. She also did some modelling with her late sister Carol Ann Smallwood. Evelyn always enjoyed spending time with all of her family. Particularly in the earlier years, she was often found to be the life the family gathering.

Evelyn found the Lord and was baptized at an early age at the Messiah Baptist Church in Bridgeport, CT. After the family moved to Stratford in 1957, Evelyn along with two other sisters joined the First Baptist Church in Stratford, CT where she has been an active disciple and member for 60 years. Evelyn loved her church and was involved in many of the community senior programs and one of her favorite activities was walking through the community, sometimes with her dog and enjoying the company of people in need. Evelyn also fellow-shipped with other believers. Evelyn spent lot’s of time around many churches in the community. She grew more diligent in attending Worship and Bible Study at First Baptist and other churches as the years went by. Evelyn was suddenly called home to Heaven on Thursday morning, July 26, 2018.

Evelyn leaves behind to cherish her memories her beloved son Christopher J. White (friend Cathy), Christopher J. White (a son by her marriage to John D. White Sr), son by marriage to John D. White Jr., her mother Lou Bertha Smallwood-Eidson, two sisters, Luvina M. Smallwood - Busby and Artise L. Smallwood - Frazier, one brother Rev E.L. (Edward) Smallwood, grandchildren Joshua Jayden Whites and Zya Jonae’ Monroe (Princess) White, four nieces Aleatha Keene, Loreen (Mark) Knittle, Darlene C. (Michael) Johnston, Michelle (William) Taylor, sister by marriage Renee Eidson- Sigmone and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Evelyn was predeceased by her father, Buster Smallwood, Grandfather Willie Smallwood, Grandmother Luvina Freeman-Smallwood, Grandfather William H. Garrett Sr and Grandmother Willie Mae Tubman- Garrett.

Evelyn’s full and adventurous life will be missed. She dared to be different in colorful ways. Her beloved son Christopher and all of the family are grateful for all of those in the church and in the community who loved and supported her struggles that we all face in this life. Jesus knows all about our struggles. Thank the Good Lord!
